VITA Delivers Record-Breaking Impact for Capital Region Families
ALBANY, NY | May 6, 2026 - United Way of the Greater Capital Region’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program achieved record-breaking results this tax season, helping thousands of local families access critical refunds and tax credits at no cost.
This year, VITA volunteers completed 7,018 tax returns across the region — a 13% increase from 2025. The impacted resulted in helping working families and individuals maximize their refunds while avoiding costly filing fees.
In total, the program secured nearly $9.75 million in refunds for local residents, including:

The average adjusted gross income for filers served through the program was $37,388, with an average refund of $1,633 per household. By utilizing free tax preparation services, families collectively saved an estimated $2.1 million in filing fees.
