For a century, United Way of the Greater Capital Region (UWGCR) has stood as a pillar of community unity, collaboration, and impact. From humble beginnings to a broad-reaching network of neighbors helping neighbors, our mission has remained steadfast: to create opportunity and hope for all.
- Founded in 1925, UWGCR was born from a shared vision of coordinated giving and service, bringing together community leaders, agencies, and volunteers to tackle the region’s toughest challenges.
- Over the decades, our programs have grown—from basic relief and food assistance to long-term strategies in education, financial stability, and health—always evolving in response to the real needs of our region.
Today, as we mark 100 years, we reaffirm our belief: United is the Way. In unity, we amplify impact. In partnership, we create sustainable change.
Our Focus
This centennial year, our focus is clear: ensuring that every child is born thriving and every individual has access to opportunity.
We work every day to support households living below the ALICE threshold—the 39% of Capital Region families struggling to afford basics like housing, childcare, and healthcare.
Born Thriving
Investing early in children and families to ensure that every child has a healthy start and a strong foundation. From prenatal support to early literacy and wellness, we aim to break the intergenerational cycle of disadvantage.
Economic Opportunity for All
Helping adults achieve financial stability, gain access to good-paying jobs, and build a secure future. This includes job training, financial counseling, tax credits, housing help, and more.
By focusing on these areas, we reach individuals across the life span—supporting children, nurturing working families, and uplifting those in transition.
