Power of Connection, Leadership, and Philanthropy
Albany, N.Y. (March 31, 2026) - In celebration of Women’s History Month Women United, an affinity group of United Way of the Greater Capital Region, hosted a Mixer with the Mayor. While the month marks the historical impact of female leaders, it also reminds women in the Capital Region their impact and dedication to community lasts all year long.
The evening was dedicated to celebrating the strength, influence, and collective power of women across the region.
The event brought together an inspiring group of female leaders, advocates, and community members for meaningful conversations and a special discussion between United Way board member Ana Killings and Albany Mayor, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs, whose insights underscored the importance of women supporting one another.
The conversation reflected on the relationships and experiences that shape women into community leaders—from the mentors who guide them early on to the communities they serve. Mayor Applyrs shared perspectives on how those foundational influences continue to inform her leadership. The discussion also explored the evolving role of women in philanthropy. Over the past two decades, women have become a driving force—not only as donors, but as active participants shaping strategy, building networks, and driving change.
A key focus of the evening was United Way’s Born Thriving Initiative, which supports families and young children from the very beginning through programs such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and Jubilant Birth. The conversation emphasized the critical importance of early investment in families and the significant role women play in advancing this work—both as advocates and as leaders in philanthropy.
Attendees were encouraged to think about how they can engage with their community—not just by showing up once, but by continuing to contribute their time, voice, and resources in sustained ways. The evening offered space to connect and reflect, prompting attendees to consider the women who have influenced their own journeys and how they, in turn, can uplift others.
As Women United looks ahead, the momentum from this gathering continues to build with opportunities for deeper engagement on the horizon.
