United Way of the Greater Capital Region Announces $100,000 Investment to Expand Digital Access Through New Partnerships.
This collaboration will increase access to affordable devices and improve digital literacy in rural communities
SCHENECTADY, NY - June 10, 2026— United Way of the Greater Capital Region in collaboration with Capital District Regional Planning Commission, Upper Hudson Library System, Schenectady County Public Library, and the Adirondack Public Library Systems, will invest $100,000 to improve and strengthen digital access across Capital Region communities.
The initiative aims to improve access to affordable devices such as laptops and tablets, provide low-cost internet solutions for residents, while expanding digital navigation resources for individuals in rural communities across Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga Counties who face barriers in access to technology.
Through this partnership, participating libraries will serve as trusted sites where residents can access technology resources and receive support in navigating online services. These efforts help build the digital skills necessary to succeed in today's connected world.
“Digital literacy is essential in participating in today’s world. You need a reliable internet connection and access to devices to access health records, apply for a job, or file for benefits. Yet many families often lack the tools necessary to stay connected. This partnership helps bridge that gap for individuals facing barriers. Libraries have always served as a trusted hub of information for our local communities. We are proud to partner with them through this program which will expand opportunities and strengthen our communities,” said Peter Gannon, President & CEO of United Way of the Greater Capital Region.
“This initiative highlights the power of partnership in addressing one of today’s most fundamental needs - reliable internet access. By working alongside United Way of the Greater Capital Region and our public libraries, we’re able to meet people where they are and connect them to the tools and support they need. Whether it’s a student trying to complete homework, a job seeker applying for opportunities, or a grandparent staying connected with family, access to the internet is essential. This effort ensures more residents can fully participate in today’s digital world,” said Mark Castiglione, Executive Director, Capital District Regional Planning Commission.
“We are grateful to United Way of the Greater Capital Region for supporting our ongoing efforts to expand digital access and technology education in our community. This funding will help the Schenectady County Public Library provide more residents with reliable internet access, digital literacy training, and technology resources through our libraries, building on the work already underway to make these services more accessible to everyone,” said Schenectady County Legislator Haileab Samuel, Chair of the Education & Libraries Committee.
"Saratoga County public libraries are excited to partner with the United Way Greater Capital to help bridge the digital divide by expanding access to affordable internet, devices, and digital support services. This funding will help connect more community members with the tools and resources they need to learn, work, and thrive in an increasingly digital world, said Jack Scott, Outreach and Information Specialist, The Southern Adirondack Library System.
“Upper Hudson Library System is thrilled to provide resources to enhance digital access at our Rensselaer County member libraries. This funding supports hands-on digital instruction, loanable devices, and connectivity support to patrons who need it most. We are grateful to United Way of the Greater Capital Region and partner funders for making this possible,” said Judith Wines, Adult and Outreach Services Manager, Upper Hudson Library System.
