United Way Young Leaders Events

August Volunteer Activity

United Way Family Resource Center School Supply Drive Volunteers

Young Leaders will partner with the United Way Family Resource Center located within the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center for their community supported School Supply Drive! YL will organize the donations by specific criteria and direction so that these supplies are ready to be distributed to the programs, families and school children in the Mechanicville and Stillwater area.

DATE:               Wednesday, August 25th

TIME:                 6:00 - 8:00 pm   (Pizza Included!)

LOCATION:        Mechanicville Area Community Services Center

                          6 South Main St., Mechanicville

DESCRIPTION:United Way Family Resource Centers provide many programs and services to families, individuals and children that help them to live happy and healthy lives. The Mechanicville FRC School Supply Drive is very successful with tremendous support from the community. Last year they served over 100 children. This year, they have been asked by the Stillwater Community Center to serve their families back to school supply needs as well so the number of children served could easily double.

Once they receive all of the donations, it takes a lot of time and resources to organize the supplies and distribute them to the children who need them. United Way wants to ensure that every child has access to the tools and resources they need for a good education. By partnering with Mechaniville, YL is doing our part to make sure the children of Mechanicville and Stillwater get a good start by having the supplies that they need to be successful.

This is a great volunteer activity that supports a United Way initiative, serves a community need, gives you an easy, hands-on volunteer opportunity at the Community Center, and provides a small glimpse into the obstacles that many of our local families face.

The Schoharie Community Garden project has been an effort underway in Schoharie County for more than two years. The plan is to provide an area near the county office complex that may serve as a "town hall" style area for residents to gather, plant fruits and vegetables to stock the local food pantry and to enjoy a recreational area. United Way volunteers are responsible for planting a community garden, putting up birdhouses, installing park benches and building a walkway.

 Unlimited Garden

Middleline Road, Ballston Spa

The Unlimited Garden is located at the 4-H training center in Ballston Spa. This garden is used year round for participants with disabilities, including those who have suffered head trauma. DECEMBER: Volunteer

TARGET SHARE A TREE

United Way of the Greater Capital Region partners with community businesses and agencies to advance the common good by focusing on basic needs, family support and financial stability. One of our community partners, Target Corporation, strives to bring holiday cheer to families in need.

Every year, Target stores donate decorated holiday trees to organizations that serve these families in our community. They have partnered with United Way to distribute trees to local agencies and organizations, tapping Young Leaders to lead this project for the 2009 holiday season.

Role of Young Leaders:
Young Leaders will establish a project team to lead and execute this project. The estimated number of needed team members is 5-10. Team members are asked to attend two to three meetings to coordinate, assign tasks, and implement the successful execution of this project.  United Way will provide all Target store and agency information. With United Way support, the team will then establish which agencies will be selected to accept trees, create an outreach plan with assignments, and provide coordination and facilitation of both tree pick up and delivery by the agency or store.

Project completion date is no later than December 23rd. If you are interested in being a part of this project team, please contact Molly Miccio, mmiccio@unitedwaygcr.org or (518) 456.2200 x 120, by
